The Basingstoke Bison lost 5-2 on their road trip to the Hull Seahawks.
This was despite getting off to a great start, taking the lead in the third minute, as they scored five seconds into the first powerplay of the night.
Will Stead converted at the back post from man of the match Luke Spadafora’s pass from the point, after Zach Shankar found him.
The Herd then doubled their lead at 12:41 as Tom Relf fired in from the blue line after a nice play between Brendan Sellan and Zack Milton.
The two-goal lead remained until the first buzzer as the Bison killed off two late penalties in the period.
After the break, Max Wright continued to keep the Seahawks out until the 29th minute when Owen Sobchak netted on the powerplay from the slot.
The home side then tied the game up, as man of the match Johnny Cornell tipped home from close range.
With the momentum now with the Seahawks, they took the lead with another powerplay strike as Bobby Chamberlain jabbed the puck home at the back post at 38:48.
As the second session came to a close, Hull ran into penalty trouble, including the dismissal of Declan Jones.
This gave the Bison a great chance to level the game with just over a minute of a two-man advantage, followed by four minutes of a one-man advantage.
The Herd did go close from George Norcliffe, Hallam Wilson and Sellan, but disappointingly were unable to find a way past the home goalie.
At the other end, Wright made an excellent save from Cornell on a breakaway, but was unable to stop Chamberlain when he broke clear from Dylan Hehir’s long pass to make it 4-2 at 51:09.
With just under three minutes left, the Herd pulled their netminder and were encamped in the Hull end, only for Hull’s Lee Bonner to hit the empty net at 59:59.
The previous night, the Herd’s home game against the Solway Sharks was postponed a few hours before face-off due to technical issues with the Basingstoke rink.
This Friday, the Bison travel to Swindon, and tickets are now on sale for the Herd’s upcoming home games
